Flower Pod Flyers shine at Nottingham’s first Super Soapbox Challenge

Last Sunday, the Flower Pod Flyers took to the start line at Nottingham’s first ever Super Soapbox Challenge in Old Market Square, representing Reach Learning Disability with energy, creativity and determination.

After months of preparation, the team worked together with Flower Pod learners to design and build their very own racecart, inspired by the Flower Pod’s beautiful environment and many wheelbarrows. Clients supported every stage of the process, from early ideas through to construction, making this a true team effort that reflects the creativity and skills developed through Reach’s programmes.

Race day brought excitement and nerves in equal measure. The course began with a steep four metre drop from the starting ramp, setting the tone for a thrilling run through the city centre. Despite a small fall in one round, the team showed resilience, got back on track and completed the challenge with confidence and pride.

The Flower Pod Flyers also brought colour and personality to the event, wearing flower power leggings, bold headwear and capes as they aimed for the Best Dressed award. While that title went elsewhere on the day, the team were recognised with the Most Innovative award, a fantastic achievement celebrating their creativity and teamwork. They were also applauded for being the only all-female team taking part.

Alongside the excitement of the race, the team achieved something equally important. Through sponsorship and community support, they exceeded their fundraising target, generating vital income to support Reach’s work with adults with learning disabilities.

Every pound raised helps us provide opportunities for people to build confidence, develop skills and form meaningful connections within their community. From creative projects like the Flower Pod to skills-based courses and social activities, this support makes a direct and lasting difference.

A huge thank you and congratulations to everyone involved. The Flower Pod Flyers have shown what is possible when creativity, community and purpose come together.
